Economic Development in Highlands County

Highlands Access to Florida Metro Areas

Highlands County is conveniently positioned in the heart of south central Florida, nearly equidistant to the metropolitan areas of Tampa, Orlando, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, Naples, and West Palm Beach. More than 82 percent of the state’s population is within a 150-mile radius of Highlands, which equates to more than 15.4 million people.

Its prime location provides direct access to Florida’s ever-growing transportation infrastructure. The county is located in close proximity to seven deep water ports, eight international airports, a regional airport, three railroads, and three major interstates.

Highlands offers an advantageous business climate and streamlined services. With only three municipalities – Avon Park, Lake Placid, and Sebring - county and city staff work collaboratively to expedite permitting processes. New and expanding businesses within the county, if they qualify, have the opportunity for development incentives, like the local Economic Development Ad Valorem Tax Abatement, Rural Job Tax Credit Program, Community Development Block Grants, and many more.
